A number of neighbourhood bistros have popped up around Edinburgh in recent years. The concept is a good one: locally sourced foods in a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. Inevitably, some work and some don't, but you would be hard pushed to find any restaurant that fulfills this ideal better than Home Bistro. The dining room has a kitsch, living room feel (hence the name), complete with flock wallpaper, ornate fireplace and scattered knick-knacks. From the moment you enter, the Maitre d' and owner bends over backwards to ensure a pleasant dining experience for his clientele. Everything on the menu is cooked from scratch from the best seasonal produce by Richard Logan, the other half of this two-man band. The menu leaves you spoilt for choice. Delicious, warm freshly-baked rolls are served to accompany tasty starters such as potted crab with dill, lemon and chilli. Warming mains, such as mutton pie contain meat slow-cooked in red wine, arrive perfectly complemented by tasty, creamy mash, while the grilled mackerel is simply magnificent. Desserts continue these high standards with an array of home-made ice-creams and fantastic traditional baked puddings. Attention to detail reins supreme here, making it very hard to fault Home. High point: Very good value early evening deal.

Visitor, Edinburgh – 4 June 2008,  This is a very nice place. Fresh simple dishes. Highly recommended. Been living here a year (from US) and have found very few places I would recommend to anyone. This would be in my top-ten however.

Edinburgher, Edinburgh – 26 July 2008, We loved this place! Such an endearing owner, falling over backwards to give you a great meal. The food came quickly, was perfectly cooked and the menu had great variety. The haggis starter was fantastic and my fellow diner's battered fish was the best he's had in a long time - not overcome with batter. Good wine list as well. We will go back to try a pudding!

Derek Williams, Edinburgh – 13 November 2008,   I fully agree with this review. First time I was in a hurry and tried the fish and chips - great! Since then I have become a regular, trying out all the options and it's good to see this place doing so well; they deserve every success.

Richardwb  on October 6th, 2008, Home Bistro, 41 West Nicolson Street, EH8 9DB, Edinburgh. A very friendly little place, with great food. I have lunch there approximately fortnightly, and the occasional pre-theatre dinner. The menu could do with changing more frequently (and the pre-theatre menu seems identical other than in price to the lunch one) but that is only likely to irritate the frequent visitor. The friendly chap who runs it (and indeed is usually the only visible member of staff apart from occasional sightings of the chef) provides excellent efficient service and is part of the charm of the place. Highly recommended!
